Making negative sentences in English involves adding not to an auxiliary verb. If there is no auxiliary verb, we use don't, doesn't, or didn't.

  • You shouldn't have called me last night.
  • He didn't take the bus this morning.
  • She hasn't seen that movie.

If the meaning of "have" is possession, there are two ways to say it in the present: have or have got. This is only in the present.

  • He hasn't got a sister.
  • We don't have any time.
  • She didn't have any money. (PAST)

Infinitives and ~ing forms can also be negative.

  • We asked you not to do that!
  • She told me not to come.
  • I love not waking up early.
  • Not eating is quite unhealthy.
