Do you celebrate New Year’s Eve? New Year’s Day is the first day of a new year. New Year’s Eve is the night before New Year’s Day. Many people around the world celebrate the New Year.
Many people have New Year’s Eve on December 31. People like to have parties with their friends. Right before midnight, a countdown begins. 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1… Happy New Year!
Many people start the new year by having a kiss. Many people start the new year by singing a special song. Many people say cheers with a drink. Somebody might say a toast. A toast is when you drink to somebody's health.
People set goals for the new year. Some people want to eat healthy. Some people want to exercise. A new year is a good time to get better.
But not everyone celebrates New Year’s Eve on the same date. In China, people celebrate Lunar New Year. The date of Lunar New Year’s Eve changes every year. It is the last day of the lunar calendar.
Millions of people travel to greet their family for Lunar New Year. They give gifts and money. Money is given in red envelopes. The money is sent to wish good luck. Red is a lucky colour.
People have a big meal with local food. Sometimes people eat dumplings for good luck. Sometimes people eat noodles to live a long life.
In Iran, people celebrate Nowruz. Nowruz is also called Persian New Year. It is the first day of spring. It is the first month of the new year.
We all celebrate New Year at different times. But it means the same thing. It is to say goodbye to the old year and hello to the new year. It is a good time to see family and friends.
