Are you tired of seeing cute animals like these?

We think it's time to start seeing cute animals...like these!

snake
spider
shark

That's more like it!

These animals are tired of being unpopular! It seems like there are some animals that everyone hates. It's time to find out more about them and clear their names up once and for all.

Watch this clip from the movie Wreck-It-Ralph. This is a meeting for all the bad guys from video games. They are talking about how much they hate being bad guys because everyone hates them!

*If you have never watched this movie, you might be confused about why they keep saying 'Turbo.' Turbo is the name of a character in the movie. We won't spoil the movie for you...watch it yourself!

Imagine you are at a meeting just like this. Except instead of unpopular video game characters, this meeting is for unpopular animals! Can you think of some unpopular animals that no one seems to like? Choose one of these animals. You are going to be representing that animal at the first annual meeting of Unpopular Animals United!

You have come to this meeting because you are upset and angry about how much people dislike you. Why, you've even found some wanted posters warning people about how terrible you are! Check out this example of a poster about the small Indian mongoose.

wanted

You need to bring a copy of this poster to your meeting to show your other unpopular animal friends. This poster is full of false information! It is all about how people perceive you and how misunderstood you are. You know all your other friends have seen posters with their faces, too. They all have words like 'gross' and 'creepy' and 'dangerous' - how mean!

Well, you have to set people straight. It's time that people learned the truth about what your animal is really like!

You are going to write a letter to the general public to tell them the truth about your animal!

Now you're reading for the meeting. Bring your poster and your letter and discuss it with all your other friends. Surely they will all have something to complain about!

office

For this unit project, you will:

  1. Prepare and make a poster to show what people generally think of your animal.
  2. Do some research and find out as many facts and interesting things about your animal as you can.
  3. Write a letter to the public to state the truth about the animal you have researched.
  4. Have a meeting of all the unpopular animals in the class! Each student will represent one animal and you will each share what you have prepared. Make costumes and props and try to 'become' your animals!
