Parallelism means to have balance in a sentence.  To establish balance in your sentences, it is necessary to write similar points with a similar structure.
What this means is that you need to include elements in your points that are grammatically equal.  Nouns should be paired with nouns, verbs with verbs, adjectives with adjectives, etc..

Here is an example of a sentence that contains errors in parallelism:

  • At my job, I get to work the cash register, pour drinks, and an opportunity to meet interesting customers.

The sentence above is awkward as it contains a list of verb phrases, but then ends with a noun phrase.

  • work the cash register (verb phrase)
  • pour drinks (verb phrase)
  • an opportunity to meet interesting customers (noun phrase)
