Can expresses ability, and in general, could is the past form.

Other forms of can are expressed by the phrase, "be able to."
- I have been able to understand this movie.
- She will be able to get here at 8pm.
- Being able to drive has really helped my lifestyle.
- I would love to be able to do that.
