There are many different linking words you can use to show a contrast between two ideas.
Coordinators
You can use but or yet to show contrast. Yet is often used to show a more surprising contrast.
- Famous people get special treatment, but they have no privacy.
- He loved animals, yet he never had a pet.
Conjunctions in Complex Sentences
You can use although, while, whereas, though, and even though to show contrast.
- Although he lived in Los Angeles for years, he never saw a famous person on the street.
- He loved rock while his sister preferred hiphop.
Transitions
You can use however, on the other hand, nevertheless, and still to show contrast.
- She always dreamed of being a stunt driver. However, she was too nervous to go to driver's school.
- People know that it is unhealthy to smoke; still they continue to do it.
