Many people know about famous explorers in history.
Look at these pictures.
All explorers wanted to be the first to find something new.
But sometimes it is hard to know who came first!
Many people know Christopher Columbus.
Columbus landed on the coast of America in 1492.
Many people think Christopher Columbus was the first person to discover North America.
However, that is not true!
Five hundred years before Christopher Columbus, another explorer landed in North America.
Leif Erikson was a Viking explorer.
When he landed in North America, he called the new land 'Vinland' after the vines he saw growing there.
But neither Columbus or Erikson were the first people to land in North America.
Thousands of years before explorers found North America, people were already living there.
The native people of the land had been living in North America for more than 8,000 years!
