Checking your understanding
It is especially important to understand tasks that you have been given in a hospital! For this reason, if you have been given an instruction, it’s a good idea to quickly clarify, or check that you have understood. To do this, you need to ‘paraphrase’, or repeat what the person said in your own words.

Listen to someone checking that they understand.

Supervisor: Hi, Katerina. I have a couple of things that need to be done right away. Could I ask you… I think Room 119 has been transferred. Could you check and do that room if the transfer is complete? Then I need the waiting room on 9 done after that.
You: So do Room 119 if it’s ready and then the waiting room. Is that right?
Supervisor: That’s it.
Checking your understanding means that you can be sure you know what to do and the speaker can be sure that you have understood.
