Part One: Warm Up
Discuss the following questions with your partner(s).
- When was the last time someone rejected your offer or refused your request? What was the situation?
- How do you feel about rejection? Are you fearful of it? Or do you just see it as a part of life?
Part Two: Vocabulary

Part Three: Listening
In this lesson, you're going to listen to three conversations about rejection and take notes. As you learned in Writing 1-3, it is important to listen for comprehension and write down conclusions and main ideas, not every detail, when taking notes.
Open the exercise and follow the instructions.

Part Four: Further Discussion
- Do you agree with Kent about how to have a successful job interview? Why or why not?
- What are some other good tips for a successful job interview?
- Do you agree more with Christine or Greg about asking someone out for the first time? What else could Daniel do in this situation?
- What should Daniel do if Elizabeth isn’t interested in him?
- Have you ever felt rejected in a class like Beth? What happened?
- Would you give the same advice to someone who hated making mistakes? What else could Luke have said?
- What is your goal for English? Is it “mastery” or something else?
Part Five: Taking it Further
For extra practice, watch and take notes on the following video about overcoming rejection. As you listen, consider these questions: What did Jia Jiang try each day? What did he learn from each experience of rejection?
When you are finished, compare your notes with your partner(s) and discuss what you learned from Jia’s life.
