Women
Use Miss if a woman is not married:
Miss + Family Name
- Michael, do you know Miss Jensen?
- I work with Miss Smith.
Use Mrs. if a woman is married:
Mrs. + Family Name
- How are you, Mrs. Johnson?
- My teacher is Mrs. Johnson.
Use Ms. if you don't know if the woman is married:
Ms. + Family Name
- Ms. Williams is the office manager.
- Are you married, Ms. Harris?
Men
Use Mr. if a man is married or not:
Mr. + Family Name
- What is your email address, Mr. Young?
- Mr. Miller is a construction worker.
Doctors
Use Dr. with men and women if they are doctors:
Dr. + Family Name
- Dr. Wilson works at the hospital.
- Dr. Hernandez is a very good doctor.
Other
To be nice, we can use this word when we talk to men:
Sir
- Sir, are you okay?
- Are you busy, Sir?
Miss
To be nice, we can use this word when we talk to a woman and we don't know her name:
- What is your name, Miss?
- Miss, where are you from?
Officer, Nurse, Doctor, Driver, Teacher
We use these words with people that do these jobs. We do not call teachers "teacher" in English:
- I'm sorry, Officer.
- Please help me, Nurse.
- Doctor, I am very sick.
- Teacher, I know the answer!
- Mr. Taylor / John, I know the answer!
