Women

Use Miss if a woman is not married:

Miss + Family Name

  • Michael, do you know Miss Jensen?
  • I work with Miss Smith.

Use Mrs. if a woman is married:

Mrs. + Family Name

  • How are you, Mrs. Johnson?
  • My teacher is Mrs. Johnson.

Use Ms. if you don't know if the woman is married:

Ms. + Family Name

  • Ms. Williams is the office manager.
  • Are you married, Ms. Harris?

Men

Use Mr. if a man is married or not:

Mr. + Family Name

  • What is your email address, Mr. Young?
  • Mr. Miller is a construction worker.

Doctors

Use Dr. with men and women if they are doctors:

Dr. + Family Name

  • Dr. Wilson works at the hospital.
  • Dr. Hernandez is a very good doctor.

Other

To be nice, we can use this word when we talk to men:

Sir

  • Sir, are you okay?
  • Are you busy, Sir?

Miss

To be nice, we can use this word when we talk to a woman and we don't know her name:

  • What is your name, Miss?
  • Miss, where are you from?

Officer, Nurse, Doctor, Driver, Teacher

We use these words with people that do these jobs. We do not call teachers "teacher" in English:

  • I'm sorry, Officer.
  • Please help me, Nurse.
  • Doctor, I am very sick.
  • Teacher, I know the answer!
    • Mr. Taylor / John, I know the answer!
