Part Four: Further Discussion

Discuss the following questions with your partner(s).

  • Was there anything you found surprising about the information you heard in the listening? If so, what?
  • How wasteful do you think you are when it comes to food?
  • Do you already do any of the steps outlined in the listening?
  • What changes from the listening could you make in your life to help to reduce food waste?

Part Five: Taking it Further

In the listening, you learned that the majority of food waste in Canada actually occurs in industry.

1) Work in groups of two or three. Your teacher will assign you one of the points along the food supply chain listed below.

  • farms
  • fishing boats
  • packaging, processing, and manufacturing facilities
  • transportation and distribution networks
  • grocery stores
  • restaurants

Go online and find out about the food waste that occurs at your assigned point. Then, come back together and share your findings with other groups.

2) Now, discuss the following with your group. Based on your and your classmates’ findings, what are some changes that could be made to reduce waste in our food system? What can citizens do to push for these changes?
