- What are the most important things you use the internet for?
- Do you think you could live without the internet? Why or why not?
- How do you think the internet works? Where do our messages go and how do we get the information we search for?

Part Three: Getting Ready to Write
In this lesson, you are going to write a detailed description of the process of sending and receiving information through the internet.
Process Writing
In process writing, the writer presents a series of steps that explain how something happens, how something works, or how something is done. It is an organizational form of writing that we commonly see when reading instructions on or explanations of how something works. It is important to note that process writing needs to be written clearly so readers can easily follow the process or explanation.
When explaining a process, writers use the following language:
Sequential Language
These are words and phrases that refer to the order of what happens in a process. You have seen this in many lessons, such as Use of English 2-1 and Use of English 5-1. Look at the following examples:
Beginning
- First…
- To start off…
- To begin with…
Continuing the process
- Then…
- After…
- Next…
- As soon as…
Ending
- Finally…
- In the end…
Passive Voice
As you already saw in Writing Skills 8-2, the passive voice is often used when describing a process because it puts the focus on the actions in the process instead of the agent.
- After the delivery truck arrives, the boxes are carried into the storage room.
- Then, the boxes are unloaded and sorted.
- Finally, the products are taken into the shop at the front of the building to be sold.
Relative Clauses
Relative clauses, as seen in Unit 4 Grammar, are often used to avoid repeating the subject. At the same time, they give additional information about a noun in the sentence making the sentence complex instead of having two separate simple sentences.
- The boxes are unloaded and sorted in the storage room, where they are then labelled with price tags.
- Finally, the products are taken to the shop in which they will be sold.
Now, open the exercise and follow the instructions.
