What are interjections? Watch this video to find out!

Interjections are words or phrases used to exclaim, protest or command. They sometimes stand by themselves, but they are often contained within larger structures.  Overall, they are words that express an emotion

  • Happy/excited:  YAY!  Hurray!  Wow!  Yea!
  • Mad: HEY! Rats!  Darn!  Damn! Shoot!
  • Surprise:  Wow!  Really!  Huh?  What!?
  • Glad/interesting:  Hey, Ooo, Ah, wow
  • Sad: Awww, Shucks!  Darn!
  • Pain:  Ouch!  Yeeow!

You use an exclamation mark (!) if the feeling is strong or a comma (,) if the feeling is weaker.

  • HEY! Don’t eat my sandwich!
  • Awww, I got a bad grade on the test.

There are a lot of interjections and almost any word can be used as an interjection.  If you want to learn more about interjections, you can see more on this link: List of Common Interjections
