Thesis statements

A thesis statement is one sentence that explains everything that will come in your paper. Everything that is in your body paragraphs should also be in your thesis statement. It is the main idea of the paper.

Example:

The following three sentences are the topic sentences of three body paragraphs.

1) Tomatoes require hot weather and lots of water in order to grow.
2) Sweet corn requires a hot and humid climate.
3) Potatoes should be planted when the weather is cool, and do not grow well in hot weather.

The main idea of these three body paragraphs is the optimal weather conditions of vegetables.

A good thesis statement for this paper would be: Tomatoes, sweet corn and potatoes each have different requirements for good growth.

Here is another example:

1) English is the most widely-spoken second language in the world.
2) Learning English is a requirement to work for many  international companies.
3) Languages, including English, are easier to learn at an early age.

A good thesis statement for this paper: English is the most commonly spoken second-language around the world, and mastering it at an early age gives a distinct advantage in the business world.
