Music is everywhere. We can enjoy music indoors and outdoors. We can enjoy music privately and publicly. Can you find music in your community?
Music can bring people together. Luke Jerram is an artist. He wanted to create a better sense of community by creating a chance for people to speak to each other. Luke Jerram began the project "Play Me, I'm Yours" and put out fifteen painted pianos on the streets. Some of the pianos had groovy designs. He had planned to leave them out for three weeks. What do you think happened? More than 140,000 people played or listened to music from his pianos. Many people from around the world heard about his project.
The project allowed people who don't have a piano to perform again. They could perform for people in their community. It also gave people a chance to share their love for music. Strangers who have never met before could bond over music. Other cities have started their own piano project. They put out communal pianos in different communities. This project has reached over five million people from all over the world. Do you see traces of this project in your neighbourhood?
Many people like to listen to their favourite singers and bands play live. That means these singers and bands will play right in front of an audience. Performing live might sound scary and unpleasant to some people. There isn't a chance to edit out a mistake. There isn't a chance for a do-over. The audience might sing along to the songs. They might dance as the songs are being performed. When a song is over, the audience gives the performers a round of applause.
You might hear some street music on a beautiful sunny Saturday afternoon. It is the perfect time for busking in many big cities. Buskers will perform their act in front of everyone on the street. They might sing. They might dance. They might play an instrument. Some buskers will even do magic tricks!
If you enjoyed the buskers' performance, you can give them a donation. Buskers usually have their instrument case open. You can drop off some money for them inside. This tells the buskers that they are doing a good job.
You don't have to sing in public all the time. You can sing at home. You can sing with your friends. Many people enjoy singing karaoke. You can choose a song you want to sing. The lyrics will appear on a screen. You will hear the melody, but there won't be anyone else singing. You can sing into a microphone and have fun. You can have a pleasant time rocking it out with your friends.
