We use “a” when the noun starts with a consonant sound.

We use “an” when the noun starts with a vowel sound.

Exceptions

  • When the “u” sounds like a “y”.
    • a university
    • a UFO
    • a unicorn
  • When consonants have a vowel sound.
    • an MBA

Plural nouns

When there is more than one object we add an “-s” / “-es” / “-ies” to the word.

  • Add “-s” at the end of most nouns.
    • a dog → dogs
    • an apple → apples
    • a teacher → teachers
    • a mechanic → mechanics
  • Add “-es” at the end of nouns that end with -ch/ -sh / -o / -x / -s
    • a church → churches
    • a dish → dishes
    • a potato → potatoes
    • a box → boxes
    • a bus → buses
  • Add “ies” at the end of nouns that end with a consonant and “y”.
    • a story → stories
    • a candy → candies
    • a sky → skies
