Subject Verb Agreement

A singular subject needs a verb in the singular form, and a plural subject needs a verb in the plural form. Here are some basic examples of subject / verb agreement:

Singular Subject & Singular Verb

  • The student goes to the library after school.

Plural Subject & Plural Verb

  • The students do their homework together in the evening.

  • something
  • someone
  • somebody
  • each
  • everything
  • everyone
  • everybody
  • either
  • anything
  • anyone
  • anybody
  • neither
  • nothing
  • no one
  • nobody
  • one 

Indefinite pronouns are singular, so they need a singular form verb:

  • Everyone in the town helps clean up after the street party.
  • One of the people I met was a musician.
  • Neither of the songs is my favorite.
