Do you know what a festival is? A festival is a celebration. Some countries have their own festivals. Some cities have their own. Some are for the whole world.
In Britain, there is Guy Fawkes Day. It is on November 5. In 1605, somebody tried to kill the king. They failed. People remember this day. They make bonfires. They set off fireworks.
In Canada, there is Thanksgiving. It is on October 11th. People eat a big buffet with their family. It is a day to think about what you have. You think about family. You think about health.
In China, there is Mid-Autumn Festival. It is in September or October. The date changes every year.
At Mid-Autumn Festival, people eat moon cakes. They have a big banquet. They carry lanterns. It brings them luck. It brings them happiness.
Mid-Autumn Festival is 3,000 years old. It was a seasonal festival. It was to be thankful for the harvest. People thanked the moon.
In Italy, there is the Carnival of Venice. It lasts for two weeks. People wear beautiful masks. They have a parade. People walk through the streets. People take boats through the city. It shows the history of the city.
All around the world, we have Earth Day. Earth Day is on April 22. It started in 1970. Now, 193 countries take part.
On Earth Day, people do things to help the Earth. We help the Earth by planting trees. We help the Earth by turning off the lights. We help the Earth by helping animals.
There are lots of different festivals in the world. Some are big. Some are small. But all are fun. The most important ones show us what we have. They teach us to be grateful. What festivals do you know?
