Objectives and Sequence: This lesson is intended to be used as a preview of Grammar 7-1.
Part One
Work with a partner and practice the following conversations. Use the recordings to help you with the pronunciation and intonation of the words. Try to mimic the style of the speakers.
A: Have you seen Mike's new car?
B: Yep. I saw it last night at the gym.
A: Did you drive it?
B: Well, I asked him if I could, but he told me there was no way he would let me drive it. He knows I haven't learned how to drive a manual yet.
A: Oh that's right. Do you think he would let me drive it?
B: Maybe, you just have to ask him. Do you know how to drive a stick?
A: Yeah, I learned when I was in high school.
A: How's your modification project going?
B: Pretty good. I've taken off the old panels and now I need to work on the speaker wiring.
A: Cool, are you replacing the speakers too?
B: Yeah, I'm going to install some new Infinity speakers before I replace the door panels.
A: Oh, interesting. Yeah, those speakers really have great sound. Have you listened to them before?
B: Yes, I have. My brother has some in his car. They sound really great.
A: Cool. Well, let me know if you need any help.
B: I will. Thanks.
A: What do you think of this English class?
B: It's awesome. You?
A: Yeah, it's really good. How many months have you studied so far?
B: Just two. What about you?
A: I've studied three months.
B: Cool. Well, good luck on your test on Monday.
A: Thanks!
A: Jean, you're a car painter, right?
B: I guess you could say that. It's just a hobby, though.
A: Would you ever be interested in doing small paint job on my car?
B: Your car? Um, I could try. I've only ever done projects on my cars. Why do you want a pant job on your car?
A: Because I got in a small accident at the supermarket. Someone backed up and hit my rear fender.
B: Oh, that makes total sense. Okay, I'll try, but like I said, I've only ever done my own cars before.
A: That's okay. I'm sure it'll be great.
Part Two
Look at the parts of the conversations that are in blue. These parts use the Present Perfect tense. With a partner, decide and discuss the time meaning of these parts. When did the actions they are describing happen?
