Math in STEM
Like English, math is a language; Math is an essential component of science, technology and engineering. At university, no matter whether you study biology, computer technology, or civil engineering, you will be required to study math, and you will be expected to successfully use math in your discipline.
Even if math comes easily to you, the English of math can be quite tricky. For example, you might be able to easily read and solve this basic equation without a calculator: x = 54 - 64. However, can you read this equation aloud in English? If you heard someone say this equation in English, would you be able to transcribe it correctly?
The first two units of this course focus on the above issue: understanding how numbers, equations, measurements, and information in charts and graphs are spoken aloud in English. The remaining units focus on language specific to branches of mathematics, such as statistics and probability, geometry, algebra and calculus.
