Analyzing Websites

Students practice evaluating websites, learning characteristics to look for when searching for strong source material for research papers and presentations.

Synthesizing Sources

Students learn strategies for synthesizing information from multiple sources and practice writing and presenting research-based projects. 

Vocabulary and Cloze Exercises

Students study academic vocabulary and word forms, practicing applying them to cloze listening and reading exercises. 

Essay Writing and Presentations

Students produce multiple essays and presentations over the course of the unit, working on a variety of skills.

Math Vocabulary

Students learn vocabulary to help them navigate the dense math terminology used throughout STEM. This unit focuses on comprehending, writing and pronouncing numbers and equations.

A reading focusing on the history of sleep, from Aristotle to modern neuroscience. The reading is accompanied by multiple comprehension and vocabulary exercises.

1-3 Analyzing Websites

Strategies for evaluating websites as trustworthy sources for research papers, including a practice exercise.

A listening about sleep cycles with multiple comprehension and vocabulary exercises.

1-1 Careers in Sleep Science

Students explore links to descriptions five different sleep science careers and present their findings.

1-2 Presentation

Students research the sleep patterns of specific animals and create a 5-10 minute slideshow presentation about how their findings are relevant to sleep science in general.

Writing
1-1 Synthesis

Students learn strategies for effectively synthesizing information from multiple sources in their writing.

1-2 Essay

Students practice what they have learned about synthesis in an essay about the mental and physical effects of lack of sleep.
