A phrasal verb is a verb that adds a small word (a preposition or adverb) called a particle to give a different meaning than the verb would have on its own.

  • I took the last piece of pizza.
  • I took up painting when I was in high school.

Take means reach and hold something in your hands, but adding the up gives the meaning of starting a new hobby or habit.
