Work in a group of 3-4 students. Discuss the following warm-up questions / activities:

  • What does “immigration” mean to you?
  • Brainstorm words related to immigration for two minutes in Exercise 1:
  • What would you do?:
    • You want to move to the US, which is a much richer country than your own.
    • Unfortunately, you and your family have tried several times and failed to get a visa. Without a visa, which may take many years to get, you can't live and work there legally.
    • Would you go to America as a legal immigrant or as an illegal immigrant? If you get caught as an illegal immigrant, you won't be able to return to the US for ten years.
  • Do you agree or disagree? Why?
    • Immigration should be strictly limited.
    • Immigrants steal jobs from a country's citizens.
    • Immigrants are important, especially in countries with a low birthrate.
    • Immigrants should have to learn the host country's language.
    • Governments are becoming stricter about immigrants.
