Your class will be divided into three groups. Each group will watch a video about approaches to stopping deforestation. You will take notes on the videos, discuss the main ideas, and organize what you learned in order to present it to others.
Group 1: Brazil
How Brazil is halting deforestation in the Amazon
Tackling deforestation in Brazil
Group 2: Zambia
Trees For Zambia 2012
Group 3:Thailand
Ecotipping Point - Reversing Tropical Deforestation
Exercise
In your group, take notes in Exercise 1 and focus on the following points:
- What are some of the main reasons for deforestation in that country? Who is responsible?
- What strategy has that country chosen to use in order to help fight deforestation there?
Exercise
In Exercise 2 discuss what you have learned from the video and decide how effective you believe the strategy is and what its advantages or disadvantages might be, especially over the long term.
With your group, organize all the information from the video and your analysis of the strategy into an outline in a new document that could be used as a presentation using the Outline strategies you have learned.
Get into a new group with students who investigated the different countries and take turns presenting your information. Take notes on each presentation and be prepared to compare the strategies and discuss which you think may be most or least effective.
