We use the comma to separate words, phrases or clauses in a series.

  • He likes holistic, alternative, and complementary medicine.
  • The ambulance drove off the road, through the fence, down the hill and into a clearing.
  • Epinephrine was isolated in Japan, Aspirin was first made in Germany, and beta blockers were developed in the UK.

We use the comma to link two independent clauses with a coordinating conjunction (and, but, so, or, for, nor, yet)

  • The service at this clinic is great, and the doctors and nurses are all attractive.
  • The government has made an effort to promote healthy eating, but it seems to have made little difference.
