An opinion-based or argumentative paragraph follows the basic paragraph structure explained in Writing 1-3.
Opinion-Based Paragraph: Structure
Topic Sentence
- contains the main idea of the paragraph. In this case, the main idea would be your clearly-stated opinion.
Supporting Sentences
- develop the main idea by defending, explaining and exemplifying your opinion with clear reasons and specific details.
- are presented in a logical order.
Concluding Sentence
- makes a final statement affirming your position and signalling to the reader that your argument has been fully developed.
Do’s
- Write in a formal, impersonal style
- make strong statements, using words like "should" or "must"
- Vary the length and style of your sentences
- Clearly explain each reason with details
- Use sequencing
- Use linking devices
Dont’s
- Don’t use contractions
- Don’t use informal/colloquial language
- Don’t use emotional language
- Don’t make over-generalizations
- Don’t invent statistics
- Don't use the first person (no I, Me, or My)
- Don't address the reader directly
- Don’t use personal examples
