Strategies

Read Actively

In nonfiction, it is important to consider what the author’s opinion might be, the tone of the author’s writing, and the author’s history. Active reading strategies are key to understanding nonfiction. Remember to ask questions before you read.

  • What is the topic?
  • What do I expect to learn?
  • Who is the author?
  • What is the author’s opinion?
  • Who is the author’s audience?

Take notes of words, phrases, and ideas that you want to understand better. When you are done reading, review your notes and ask yourself questions again. Decide what is answered and what questions you still have.
