Part One: Discussion

Work with a partner or group and discuss the following statements. Do you agree or disagree? How much or how little do you agree/disagree with each statement? Give clear reasons and examples for your opinion:

  • It is important to preserve traditions.
  • Large, extravagant weddings are a waste of money.

Part Two: Organization

As we discussed in Unit 2, an Agree/Disagree writing assignment is based on your opinion. However, an opinion is only strong if it is supported by a developed argument. You should try to support your opinion with three clear reasons, and you should expand upon each reason with specific details. Details, such as specific examples, will develop and explain your reasons so that they are clear to the reader. All of your sentences need to be logically organized so the reader can easily follow your points. Consider the organization of the paragraph below, which argues for an increase in summer street festivals in Vancouver.

Vancouver should have increased the number of street festivals in the summer. Car-free street parties are good for the people living in the area. These events bring neighbours together and create a sense of community; furthermore, activities for children provide an inexpensive, family-friendly way to spend a sunny afternoon. Pedestrianizing the streets for such events is also beneficial for businesses. Street festivals are good for cafes, restaurants and pubs, which are always full of patrons looking for something to eat or drink. Also, clothing stores and smaller businesses can showcase their products on the street. Car-free street parties are good for tourists as well. Going to a street festival is an authentic experience for people who want to see what the city has to offer other than the typical sightseeing tours. It is a great way for visitors to taste regional food and hear local music. Therefore, for the benefit of residents, tourists and local businesses, the city should organize more street parties during the summer months.
