Students work in pairs and open the corresponding tabs above.

  1. On each page, students are presented with descriptive situations and the question, "What could you say?"
  2. Students take turns describing their situations, and their partners should answer with the correct modal verb of probability.

Example:

You are expecting a phone call from Jim. Suddenly, the phone rings. You expect the phone call to be for you. What could you say?

It should be for me.

  1. John's bag and laptop are in the classroom although he is not. You saw him heading towards the bathroom earlier. Based on these facts, what could you say?
    • He must be in the bathroom.
  2. You expect that tonight's party will be fun. What could you say?
    • Tonight's party should be fun.
  3. When you came to school, the weather was terrible. Someone just told you that it's sunny outside. Based on these facts, what could you say?
    • It can't be sunny.
  4. Your friend just bought a new MP3 player. He has charged it overnight but it is not working. You think there is a possibility that MP3 player is broken. What could you say?
    • It may / might / could be broken.
  5. Tomorrow night, you and some friends are going to an Italian restaurant for dinner. You have eaten there many times before, and the food has always been absolutely delicious. One of your friends asked you if the food will be good. What could you say to sound pretty certain?
    • It should be good.
  6. You are going to buy a new computer. In this country, if a computer is for school, you are pretty sure that there is no tax. The cashier has charged you tax and you are surprised. What could you say?
    • I shouldn't have to pay tax.
  7. Someone has asked you your opinion of why alcohol in this country is so expensive. You think it's a possibility that alcohol is expensive because of tax. What could you say?
    • Alcohol may / might / could be expensive because of tax.
  8. Last night, you went out with your friend to a movie. After the movie, you went home, but your friend decided to go out with some other friends to a nightclub. Now, it is morning, and your friend is not in class. You are certain he is sleeping at home. What could you say?
    • He must be sleeping right now.
  9. Your friend has just told you that she hasn't eaten anything today. Based on these facts, what could you say?
    • You must be hungry!
  10. You have just woken up. You look outside and see that it's a beautiful day. You are also looking forward to other things you have planned for the day. You expect it to be a great day. What could you say?
    • It should be a great day.
  1. You are at the movie theatre now with a friend. You are certain that the movie your friend wants to see is terrible. What could you say?
    • That movie must be terrible.
  2. You are Mexican and enjoy really spicy food. Your girlfriend is from Japan, and doesn't usually eat spicy food. She wants to eat one of your peppers. You think that it's possible it will be too spicy for her. What could you say?
    • It may / might be too spicy for you.
  3. You are the captain of an airplane. Before you take off, you check the reports of the air conditions. Everything looks fine. What could you say about the flight to your passengers in your announcement?
    • It should be a nice flight.
  4. You and your friend made plans to meet an hour ago. You are stuck in traffic and are one hour late. Finally, you see that your friend is still waiting. You are sure your friend is angry. What could you say?
    • You must be angry.
  5. You are a vegetarian. You are at a barbecue, and your friend offers you a vegetarian hot dog. You think this is impossible. What could you say?
    • This can't be a vegetarian hot dog!
  6. You and Jane went shopping after class. Later, at home, your roommate tells you that Jane is flying back to her country tomorrow. You think this is impossible because Jane didn't say anything. What could you say?
    • Jane can't be flying home tomorrow!
  7. Your friend is planning a trip to your country. She describes her plans to you and you think that it's possible that her trip will not be cheap. What could you say?
    • Your trip may / might not be cheap.
  8. It's 4PM. Your mother wants to go to the bank. You think it's possible that the bank is closed. What could you say?
    • The bank may / might / could be closed.
  9. You are at a restaurant with friends. You ordered your food twenty minutes ago. You see across the restaurant, your waitress is carrying food. You expect that it is your food. What could you say?
    • That should be our food.
  10. You are sure Jane is at home, but you have called her many times in the last five minutes, and she hasn't answered. You are sure the only reason Jane hasn't answered her phone is because she is in the shower. Based on these facts, what could you say?
    • She must be taking a shower.
