There are many reasons to use commas in English sentences. At the this level, we will study five reasons:

Lists of Three or More Words or Phrases

  • Peter, John, and Margaret came with me to the restaurant tonight. (3 things)
  • We are going to meet at 5:30 PM, eat dinner at a restaurant at 6 PM, see a movie at 7 PM, and return home at 10 PM. (4 things)
  • He is going to be here on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday. (3 things)
  • It snowed today and yesterday. (2 things - no comma!)

Before Names When Addressing People

  • Do you feel okay, Steve?
  • What about you, Janet?
  • What are you doing tonight, Erin?
  • What happened, Mark?
  • Shaun is an English teacher. (no comma)

When the First Word of a Sentence is Yes or No

  • Yes, I am.
  • No, I won't.
  • No, I'm not.
  • No, he is going to come tomorrow.
  • Yes, he was.

Dates: (Month Day, Year)

  • I am flying to Canada on January 21st, 2015. (comma after day)
  • She is going to come here on May 5th, 2016. (comma after day)
  • It is going to start in September 2016. (no day, no comma)
  • It is going to start on September 15th. (no year, no comma)
  • I came to this country on May 1st. (no year, no comma)

City, Country or City, State / Province

  • Vancouver, Canada
  • San Francisco, California
  • Hermosillo, Mexico
  • New York, New York
