Unfortunately, English is a strange and tricky language! There are many verbs that do not follow the regular simple past rule.

For verbs that end in e, all you have to do is add a -d to the end.

Verb bake change rope complete believe
Past Verb baked changed roped completed believed

For verbs that end in the letter y, change the y to an i and add -ed to the end.

Verb cry try apply marry fry
Past Verb cried tried applied married fried

Often, when words end with one vowel and one consonant, you have to double up th consonant before adding -ed.

Verb rap flip rub snap commit
Past Verb rapped flipped rubbed snapped committed
