6-2 Sentence Order

In an earlier unit, you learned about unity and making sure the your supporting sentences were all connected to the main idea. It is also important to put your supporting sentences in a logical order–an order that makes sense to the reader. The way you order your supporting sentences will depend on the type of paragraph you are writing:

You use time order when you are telling a story. When you are writing about an experience, you usually order your sentences based on what happened first, then what happened next, etc.

When describing a place or thing, you need to put your details in order based on what you see first. If you are describing a building, you will describe the outside first, and then the inside. If you are describing a person, you will describe the whole person (tall, short, etc), then most likely describe him or her from head to toe.
