Students explore vocabulary and activities related to science fiction, including topics such as Area 51, Bigfoot, ghosts and spirits, the Loch Ness Monster, etc..

Defining Adjective Clauses

Students are introduced to defining adjective clauses as a common way to identify or describe a noun or pronoun.

Non-Defining Adjective Clauses

Students learn to use non-defining adjective clauses to add non-essential information to a sentence, a literary device commonly used in formal writing.

Changing Verbs to Adjectives and/or Adverbs

Students practice how to construct adjectives or adverbs from verbs as well as interpret the active or passive meaning of participles in sentences.

6-1 Adjective Clauses: A

Students practice defining adjective clauses with relative pronouns as both subjects and objects. Grammar 6-1 focuses on the relative pronouns, who, that, which, who, and whom.

6-2 Adjective Clauses: B

Students practice forming adjective clauses using the relative pronouns, whose, where, and when. Also, Grammar 6-2 practices preposition placement in adjective clauses.

6-3 Defining and Non-Defining Adjective Clauses

Students learn the differences between the two kinds of adjective clauses including the required relative pronouns and punctuation.

6-4 Participles

Students study both the active meaning of present participles as well as the passive meaning of past participles when used as adjectives or adverbs.

6-1 Linking Comparison and Contrast

Students learn linking devices specifically used to express similarity and difference, then combine sentences in a practice exercise.

6-2 Run-on Sentences and Comma Splices

Students learn how to identify and avoid run-on sentences and comma splices, then do a practice exercise correcting these types of errors

6-3 Comparison/Contrast Paragraph

Students brainstorm ideas in groups, then write a paragraph comparing and/or contrasting two mythical creatures.

6-1 Bigfoot

A listening activity based on a description of Bigfoot sightings and the continued effort by some to gain proof of its existence.

6-2 Paranormal State

Video-listening activity based on the reality television program, Paranormal State.
