Intro Student One Student Two

  1. Students work with partners. One group of three can be made if necessary. Students open the corresponding pages.
  2. Students imagine they are in situations where they must either ask for or give permission. The student and his or her partner may be a mother and child, a teacher and student, etc..
  3. For each situation, both students are presented with their roles and what they are asking or giving permission to do. Students are to have fun, and make a role play asking or giving permission about the situation specified.
  4. The person with authority ultimately gives permission, but should stipulate a condition for the permission. They must use one of the four studied expressions:
    • provided that
    • providing that
    • so long as
    • as long as

Example:

Student one
  1. Your Role: Friend, Your Partner's Role: Friend
    • Ask to borrow your friend's car.
    • "Would you mind if I borrowed you car today?"
Student two
  1. Your Role: Friend, Your Partner's Role: Friend
    • Student two: Let your friend borrow your car. (with a condition)
    • "Sure, as long as you remember to put some gas in it when you are done."
  1. Your Role: Friend, Your Partner's Role: Friend
    • Ask to borrow your friend's car.
  2. Your Role: Mother, Your Partner's Role: Son or Daughter
    • Let your son have a cookie.
  3. Your Role: Coworker, Your Partner's Role: Coworker
    • Ask your partner to do your shift tonight for you.
  4. Your Role: Friend, Your Partner's Role: Friend
    • Let your friend borrow your phone.
  5. Your Role: Son or Daughter, Your Partner's Role: Father or Mother
    • Ask your mother or father if you can go out tonight with your friends.
  6. Your Role: Apartment Manager Your Partner's Role: Apartment Renter
    • Let the renter pay rent one week late.
  7. Your Role: Criminal ,Your Partner's Role: Judge
    • Ask the judge to let you go.
  8. Your Role: Teacher, Your Partner's Role: Student
    • Let the student go to the bathroom.
  1. Your Role: Friend, Your Partner's Role: Friend
    • Let your friend borrow your car.
  2. Your Role: Son or Daughter, Your Partner's Role: Mother
    • Ask your mother if you can have a cookie.
  3. Your Role: Coworker, Your Partner's Role: Coworker
    • Agree to do your partner's shift for him or her.
  4. Your Role: Friend, Your Partner's Role: Friend
    • Ask to borrow your friend's phone.
  5. Your Role: Father or Mother, Your Partner's Role: Son or Daughter
    • Agree to let your son or daughter go out tonight with his or her friends.
  6. Your Role: Apartment Renter, Your Partner's Role: Apartment Manager
    • Ask the apartment manager if it is okay to pay rent one week late.
  7. Your Role: Judge, Your Partner's Role: Criminal
    • Agree to let the criminal go.
  8. Your Role: Student, Your Partner's Role: Teacher
    • Ask to go to the bathroom.
