There are several good reasons to include conditional sentence structures in your essays or other writing assignments. First of all, using conditionals is a simple way to add variety to your writing and to show your range. Conditional sentences are also useful when considering the implications, or possible future effects, of an action or idea. It is quite common for a writer to use conditional sentences to support or develop an opinion or point by suggesting possible results. Also, conditional sentences are used to make predictions and give warnings, both of which can make strong concluding statements in a paragraph or essay.

Example:

  • Point
    • The city should invest more money to increase the number of bicycle routes around the city and into the downtown area.
  • Supporting detail
    • If they did so, more and more people would be able to cycle to work and school, which would have obvious physical benefits for these citizens, but would also help to further reduce pollution and traffic congestion.
