Inversion (Question Word Order)

Many questions in English follow the pattern:

Question Word + Auxiliary Verb + Subject + Verb

  • Where did you go?
  • What are you going to eat?
  • Who should I call?
  • How are you doing?
  • How have you been?

If questions are asking for a yes or no answer, we of course, do not need a question word:

Auxiliary Verb + Subject + Verb

  • Are you going to the party?
  • Could you give me a hand?
  • Do I have to come?
