Modals are special verbs that behave irregularly in English. We will be looking at the different modals used in English and how to use them in our speech and writing throughout this unit.

Absolutely Necessary

  • Must
  • Have to
  • Have got to

These three modals are used to say something is necessary to do. Must, have to, and have got to are all very similar in meaning but are used in slightly different situations.

Must is the most formal out of all these three modals.

  • You must take out the trash or I'm making you sleep out in the backyard for the rest of the week!
