More people have been to the moon than to the deepest part of the Earth's oceans.
Look at these pictures.
Only a few brave explorers have really seen the deep ocean.
Oceans make up 71% of the Earth's surface.
Oceans make up 97% of Earth's water.
But did you know that 95% of Earth's oceans have never been explored?
Only three people have ever been to the deepest part of the ocean.
There are not very many explorers in the deep sea!
Jacques Cousteau was one of the first famous deep sea explorers.
Cousteau invented the Aqua-Lung.
It was the world's first scuba set.
Cousteau spent a lot of time studying animals in the deep sea.
Cousteau inspired young scientists.
One of the scientists inspired by Cousteau was Sylvia Earle.
Today, at the age of 78, Earle is still one of the most famous ocean explorers.
She still goes on long dives in submarines to study the deep sea.
Just like Jacques Cousteau, Sylvia Earle wants to help protect the deep sea.
We know so little about the deep sea and what lives down there.
If we don't protect the deep sea, we may never learn about it!
