1. This activity starts with the teacher assigning the class into pairs. One member of each pair should then open the following document, make a copy, and share it with their partner.
  2. When the class is ready, students discuss and speculate about the situation #1. Students need to speculate at least three different possibilities about the situation using modal verbs of probability. They write the speculations for the situation and give a reason to support their ideas.
  3. Students should be given three to four minutes to discuss and write their ideas.
  4. Then, the teacher clicks the clue #1 on the situation page. The clue gives students more information about what is happening. They then discuss and write three more different possibilities and explanations with the new information.
  5. This is repeated one more time with the clue #2.
  6. Finally, the teacher clicks End to give closure about the situation.
  7. There are three different situations, and as such, the steps above can be done three different times.

There has been a lack of rain over the past few years, and the animals are disappearing because of starvation.

Situation #2

Joe hates being at the airport. In addition, he does not work at the airport.

Joe decided not to take his flight because he is afraid of flying.

Situation #3

A family is trying to immigrate to North America from their country.

The mother and father have great jobs in their home countries and have plenty of money.

There is a possibility the mother and father will not find jobs that are as good as their jobs in their home countries.

There is a violent conflict in their home country.
