A noun is the naming part of a sentence. It tells us who, what, or where, the sentence is about.

  • The boy is here. “Boy” is a noun.
  • I go to school. “School” is a noun.

A noun will always tell us if something is a person, a place or a thing.

  • School, home, and shop are all places.
  • Mother, father, brother, and sister are all people.
  • Pencil, pen, and book are all things.

Nouns can be divided into 2 kinds: proper nouns and common nouns.

A proper noun is the name of a person, place, or thing. A proper noun always begins with a capital letter.

A common noun is a word telling us about a person, place, or thing.

  • Animals
  • House
  • Family

Days and Months

Days of the week are proper nouns. They all begin with a capital letter.
