For K–12 schools

An English curriculum for every grade and age group

Children, Kids and Youth courses mapped to Canadian grades, the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) and Cambridge exams, taught to the same standard in every classroom, with attendance and reports for the school office.

Will this fit our grades, our teachers and our school office?

Yes. Each track is built for an age group: Children for ages 6 to 9, Kids for 9 to 13 and Youth for 12 to 18. Lessons are ready to teach, attendance is taken from the class list, and coordinators follow progress in every class through the same reports.

Our approach

A literacy-based curriculum, mapped to Canadian learning objectives

The Kids and Youth courses were developed by Little Mountain Learning Academy. Students learn English through stories, articles and media, working together, and each course is mapped to the English Language Arts objectives of the British Columbia Ministry of Education.

Read the method and its references

Learning through texts

Grammar, vocabulary and listening are taught in context, through reading and media, with phonics and sight words at the first levels.

Integrated language arts

Speaking, listening, reading, viewing, writing and representing are taught together, because each one strengthens the others.

Collaborative learning

Students tutor and edit each other's work in pairs and groups, with the teacher guiding as a facilitator.

Deeper thinking

Activities are planned against Bloom's taxonomy, so students move from remembering towards analysing and creating.

A documented method

Every level mapped to the CEFR and international exams

A North American curriculum benchmarked to international standards. Every course lines up with a Canadian grade, a CEFR band, a Cambridge exam and an IELTS range, from kindergarten to Grade 8.

  • Kindergarten to Grade 8, by Canadian grade

Anything else? Contact us.

Will every class in the grade really get the same program?

Yes. Homeroom and specialist teachers open the same prepared lesson, practice with set answers is marked automatically, and attendance is taken from the class list. Coordinators see progress by grade and by class in the same reports, so they can see where a class needs support.

How do the Kids and Youth courses teach English?

The Kids and Youth curriculum is literacy-based: students learn grammar, vocabulary and listening in context through stories, articles and media, and work together in pairs and groups. Each course is mapped to the English Language Arts objectives of the British Columbia Ministry of Education.

Which ages are covered?

All school ages. Children covers the early years (ages 6 to 9), Kids covers primary (9 to 13), Youth covers secondary (12 to 18), and Exam Prep covers the senior years.

How do we explain a student’s level to parents?

Each course lines up with a Canadian grade, a CEFR band, a Cambridge exam and an approximate IELTS range, as shown in the level chart on this page. Students also see their own grades and completed work on the platform.

Is our data kept separate?

Yes. Each school’s students, classes, grades and attendance records are kept separate from every other school’s, and each API key only reaches its own institution’s data.

Do you support single sign-on?

Yes. Staff and students can sign in to Smrt English with the Google or Microsoft accounts your school already uses.

Is teacher training included?

Yes. Qualified Canadian teachers train your teachers on the curriculum and the platform during implementation, and professional development courses for teachers are free on the platform.
