For governments and public programs

English programs for a whole city, state or university system

Courses built to your official study program and mapped to the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR), training for the teachers you already have, and one set of reports across every school.

A public secondary school class following a lesson on the classroom display

Can it run across hundreds of classes, and show us the program is working?

Yes. Every school, class and student sits in one system, so attendance, grades and assessment results report across the whole program and by school. Universidad Estatal de Sonora had 9,300 students on Smrt English, and cities in Brazil run their public English programs on it.

Baseline and results

A common baseline, and results the program office can report

Placement tests put every student at the right level and give the program a common baseline, so progress is measured from the same starting line in every school. Where a program ends in an exam, preparation courses get students ready for ELASH II, the Oxford Test of English and IELTS.

  • Placement tests for every intake
  • Progress measured from a common baseline
  • Exam preparation for ELASH II, OTE and IELTS

Our approach

A communicative curriculum, grounded in research

Smrt English courses follow communicative language teaching. In every unit, students use English with a partner or a small group, teachers scaffold each step, and lessons draw on authentic listening and reading. Every level develops the same four competences.

Read the method and its references

Linguistic competence

Vocabulary, pronunciation and grammar: the words and rules students need to form accurate sentences.

Textual competence

Managing longer speech and writing, with cohesion, discourse markers and conversational turns.

Sociocultural competence

Using English appropriately: politeness, register and the norms of different situations.

Functional competence

Using language to get things done, such as requesting, offering and inviting.

A documented method

Every level mapped to the CEFR and international exams

Each course is mapped to CEFR, the Canadian Language Benchmarks, IELTS and TOEFL, so staff and students know what finishing a level means. Theory and Practice sets out how the curriculum is built, sequenced and assessed.

  • Two six-unit courses at every level
  • From Pre-A1 to C1
  • A published method, with its research references

Questions

Questions from program offices

These answers cover reporting across schools, the official study program, method, devices, public tenders, data and teacher training.

Anything else? Contact us.

How do we know the program is working across hundreds of schools?

Every school runs the same courses, built to your study program, and every class feeds the same reports on attendance, courses and assessments, by school and by class. Placement results give every school a common baseline, so the program office can see where the program is working and where a school needs support, without collecting spreadsheets.

Can the courses follow our official study program?

Yes. Our curriculum team builds courses from the official study program itself, unit by unit, as it did for the national study programs of Mexico’s technological universities. Levels and outcomes are mapped to the CEFR.

What teaching method do the courses follow?

The courses follow communicative language teaching. In every unit, students use English with a partner or a small group, teachers scaffold each step, and lessons draw on authentic listening and reading. Theory and Practice sets out the method and its research references.

Do students need a device for every class?

No. Teachers can run lessons on a classroom display, and a printed student book can sit beside the platform. In Itaquaquecetuba, each page of the printed book links straight into the matching exercises.

Do you respond to public tenders?

Yes. Our regional teams in Mexico and Brazil prepare proposals and documentation for public procurement, working in Spanish and Portuguese.

Is our data kept separate?

Yes. Each school’s students, classes, grades and attendance records are kept separate from every other school’s, and each API key only reaches its own institution’s data.

Is teacher training included?

Yes. Qualified Canadian teachers train your teachers on the curriculum and the platform during implementation, and professional development courses for teachers are free on the platform.
