Our Story
Built in a Vancouver classroom, used by schools around the world
Smrt English began as the curriculum and platform of the Canadian College of English Language in Vancouver. In 2012, after visitors took the idea home to their own schools, we made it available for any school to license.
Our journey
Our history, from one college to schools in many countries
Since 2012, Smrt English has grown from one Vancouver college to partnerships with universities, state and city programs, and schools abroad. These are the milestones along the way.
January 2012
Available to any school
Visitors to CCEL took the idea home to their own schools, so we launched a platform any school could license.
2013
A partnership with Senac Recife
Senac in Recife, Brazil, began working with Smrt English and our team in Canada, the start of a partnership that continues today.
2014
Local teams in Brazil and Mexico
Smrt Idiomas Brazil opened, and Smrt English began working with schools across Mexico through a local representative.
December 2017
A partnership with Little Mountain Learning Academy
Little Mountain Learning Academy in Vancouver brought its English for Kids and Youth curriculum to Smrt English, then added an early childhood course for the youngest learners.
2021
PIEoneer Awards finalist
Smrt English was named a finalist for Digital Innovation of the Year - Learning at The PIEoneer Awards, which recognize innovation across global education.
2021
Paraná's state universities
Through the Paraná Speaks English program, seven state universities in Paraná, Brazil, including Unioeste, Unicentro, UENP and Unespar, taught English with Smrt English courses adapted to their program.
June 2023
The Smrt app
A mobile app for students and teachers arrived, in sync with the website, with lessons, assignments and assessments on their phones.

The Paraná Speaks Languages program invited Smrt English to join the celebration of its tenth anniversary.

Building Bridges Through Language
Our philanthropic program focused on English for Ukrainian newcomers in Winnipeg, taught by local volunteers in community spaces across the city.

A new chapter with Sunshine in China
After our team met Sunshine in Shanghai, a new agreement began bringing Smrt English courses to many more students in China.
March 2025
English for STEM in Jalisco
After a nationwide search, Smrt English and CCEL were selected to deliver an English for STEM program at Universidad Tecnológica de Jalisco, with the Government of Canada, Languages Canada and the State of Jalisco.

An admissions test aligned to IELTS 5.5 Academic, built for institutions to run for their own applicants.

Guaratinguetá no Mundo
The city of Guaratinguetá in São Paulo state chose Smrt English for Guaratinguetá no Mundo, its English program.

An API for institutions
The Smrt English Client API began returning student and class records to institutions' own systems.
2026
Itaquá Para o Mundo
Itaquaquecetuba launched Itaquá Para o Mundo with Smrt English, including a printed student book that links straight into Smrt exercises.
June 2026
New exam courses and offline grades in the gradebook
Courses for the Oxford Test of English, ELASH II and CELPIP joined the library, and teachers could bring offline grades into the gradebook.

Why we combined the curriculum and the platform
Classrooms are moving from printed textbooks and handouts to digital lessons. Many tools cover one piece: teacher resources, online courses or a learning management system. Smrt English provides the curriculum and the platform together, with training for the teachers who use them.
