Will it fit our study plan, and hold up across every campus?

Yes. Courses are mapped to the CEFR and to your study plan, every group teaches the same course, and exercises with set answers are marked automatically. Attendance, grades and assessment results are reported by campus and export as spreadsheets or through a read-only API.

  • Practice and quizzes with set answers marked automatically
  • A gradebook and attendance record for each group, with reports across all of them

Placement and exit

Placement at intake, exam preparation at exit

Placement tests sort each intake into the right level before term starts, and a custom test can follow your own levels. At exit, preparation courses for ELASH II, the Oxford Test of English, IELTS and CELPIP include practice tests modelled on each exam.

  • Placement tests for every intake
  • Custom placement tests for your program
  • Exam preparation for ELASH II, OTE, IELTS and CELPIP

Records and reporting for the registrar’s office

Every campus, class, teacher and student sits under one institution. Each report can be run for a single campus or for the whole institution, and exported for your own systems.

All campuses under one institution

Campuses, classes, teachers and students under one institution, each campus’s data kept separate.

Reports by campus

Attendance, course and assessment reports for each campus and for the whole institution.

Attendance in every class

Teachers take attendance from the class list, and the registrar sees it by class.

Our approach

A communicative curriculum, grounded in research

Smrt English courses follow communicative language teaching. In every unit, students use English with a partner or a small group, teachers scaffold each step, and lessons draw on authentic listening and reading. Every level develops the same four competences.

Read the method and its references

Linguistic competence

Vocabulary, pronunciation and grammar: the words and rules students need to form accurate sentences.

Textual competence

Managing longer speech and writing, with cohesion, discourse markers and conversational turns.

Sociocultural competence

Using English appropriately: politeness, register and the norms of different situations.

Functional competence

Using language to get things done, such as requesting, offering and inviting.

A documented method

Every level mapped to the CEFR and international exams

Each course is mapped to CEFR, the Canadian Language Benchmarks, IELTS and TOEFL, so staff and students know what finishing a level means. Theory and Practice sets out how the curriculum is built, sequenced and assessed.

  • Two six-unit courses at every level
  • From Pre-A1 to C1
  • A published method, with its research references

These answers cover teaching standards, levels, data, sign-in, admissions testing and implementation.

Anything else? Contact us.

Every teacher uses different materials. How do we get one standard across all our groups?

Every group follows the same Smrt English course, with the same scope and sequence, learning objectives and quizzes. Exercises with set answers are marked automatically, and attendance, grades and placement results go into one record your office can export. Coordinators can compare groups directly, and a new teacher delivers the same program from their first class.

How do Smrt English levels map to the CEFR?

The Adults track runs from Pre-A1 to C1, in two six-unit courses at every level, and the Academics courses reach C1 and above. The equivalency table on this page maps each level to the CEFR, the Canadian Language Benchmarks, IELTS and TOEFL, so exit levels can be written into your study plan.

What teaching method do the courses follow?

The courses follow communicative language teaching. In every unit, students use English with a partner or a small group, teachers scaffold each step, and lessons draw on authentic listening and reading. Theory and Practice sets out the method and its research references.

Is our data kept separate?

Yes. Each school’s students, classes, grades and attendance records are kept separate from every other school’s, and each API key only reaches its own institution’s data.

Do you support single sign-on?

Yes. Staff and students can sign in to Smrt English with the Google or Microsoft accounts your school already uses.

How do Smrt English Test scores compare to IELTS?

The Smrt English Test is aligned to IELTS 5.5 Academic and CEFR B2, and sets a clear pass for admissions. The equivalency table on this page maps each Smrt English course level to the CEFR, the Canadian Language Benchmarks, IELTS and TOEFL.

Is teacher training included?

Yes. Qualified Canadian teachers train your teachers on the curriculum and the platform during implementation, and professional development courses for teachers are free on the platform.
