How Smrt English levels map to CEFR, IELTS and TOEFL

Each Smrt English level from 100 to 145 lines up with a CEFR band, the Canadian Language Benchmarks, and IELTS and TOEFL score ranges.

For students, teachers, school leadersUpdated 23 September 2026

Smrt English courses are numbered by level, from 100 for true beginners to 145 for advanced academic English. This is how each level compares with other scales.

Level by level

  • Level 100 (English One and Two): CEFR Pre-A1 to A1
  • Level 110 (English Three and Four): CEFR A1, CLB 2
  • Level 115 (English Five and Six): CEFR A1 to A2, CLB 3, IELTS 3.0 to 3.5
  • Level 120 (English Seven and Eight): CEFR A2 to B1, CLB 4 to 5, IELTS 4.0 to 4.5, TOEFL 32 to 41
  • Level 125 (English Nine and Ten): CEFR B1 to B2, CLB 6 to 8, IELTS 5.0 to 5.5, TOEFL 42 to 59
  • Level 130 (English Eleven and Twelve): CEFR B2 to C1, CLB 9 to 10, IELTS 5.5 to 6.0, TOEFL 60 to 78
  • Level 140 (Academics 140): CEFR B2 to C1, CLB 9 to 10, IELTS 5.5 to 6.0, TOEFL 60 to 78
  • Level 145 (Academics 145): CEFR C1+, CLB 11 to 12, IELTS 6.0 to 6.5+, TOEFL 79 to 95+

Levels 100 and 110 have no IELTS or TOEFL equivalent, and level 100 has no CLB equivalent.

CLB: Canadian Language Benchmarks. IELTS Academic band and TOEFL iBT score ranges are equivalents, not results.

What this means

Finishing a level does not give you an IELTS or TOEFL score. The ranges show roughly where a student at that level would be. To get an official score, you take that exam. Smrt English has courses that prepare you for exams such as IELTS and TOEFL ITP. See What courses does Smrt English offer?

Kids and Youth courses

English for Kids and English for Youth use the same level numbers, but each level sits at its own CEFR band:

  • Kids: from English 110 Kids at CEFR A1 to English 130 Kids at B1
  • Youth: from English 110 Youth at CEFR A2 to English 130 Youth at B2

English for Children courses come before CEFR levels. They sit below and at CEFR Pre-A1 and are organised by stage: phonics, early reading, then early writing.
