What courses does Smrt English offer?

Courses are grouped into tracks by age and purpose, from early childhood English to academic English and exam preparation.

For students, teachers, school leadersUpdated 23 September 2026

Smrt English courses are grouped into tracks. Most tracks go level by level, from beginner to advanced, and each level is mapped to CEFR. Your school chooses which courses your classes use.

General English

  • English for Adults: general English for learners aged 14 and up, from true beginner to advanced. English One to English Twelve are six-unit courses, two for each level, so English One and Two cover level 100 and English Eleven and Twelve cover level 130.
  • English for Youth: five levels for students reading at about the age 9 to 14 level, from English 110 Youth (CEFR A2) to English 130 Youth (B2).
  • English for Kids: five levels for young learners reading at about the age 6 to 10 level, from English 110 Kids (CEFR A1) to English 130 Kids (B1).
  • English for Children: three courses for children aged 6 to 9 who are new to English, taught in order: Early Childhood Education (phonics), Elementary English One (early reading) and Elementary English Two (early writing).
  • Bilingual Bridging Courses: for true beginners, with support in their first language, leading into English 110.

English for a purpose

  • Academics: advanced courses for college and university study, at CEFR B2 to C1 and above: college communications, business communication, intercultural communication and English for STEM. They were developed with the Canadian College of English Language in Vancouver.
  • English for Specific Purposes: English for a field, such as aviation, the automotive industry, health sciences, business administration, computing and teaching. Each course is set at a Smrt English level.
  • English for Exam Preparation: courses for IELTS, CELPIP General, CAEL, TOEFL ITP, iTEP Academic-Plus, the Oxford Test of English and College Board ELASH II. They teach the format, strategies and timing of one test. They do not teach general English, so students should already be close to the level the exam needs.
  • Electives: short courses on one skill or topic, taken alongside a core course.

Where to start

New students usually start with a placement test, which shows the course that matches their level. See Take a placement test. To see how the levels compare with CEFR, IELTS and TOEFL, see How Smrt English levels map to CEFR, IELTS and TOEFL.

Teachers can look inside every course, unit and lesson in the Library. See Find courses in the Library. The full list is also on the Curriculum page.
