In a speaking question, tap the microphone button, speak, and tap the stop button when you finish. Your recording saves with your answers. Tap the play button to listen to it, or Record again to try again. The first time, your phone asks if the app can use the microphone. Allow it.

A speaking question with a saved recording and Record again

Record your answer

  1. Open the exercise or quiz and go to the speaking question.

  2. Tap the blue microphone button. The first time, allow the app to use the microphone.

  3. Speak. The app shows "Recording", the time, and a bar that moves with your voice.

  4. Tap the red stop button. The app shows "Saving…", then "Your recording" and its length.

  5. Tap the play button to listen.

  6. Not happy with it? Tap Record again.

  7. When you have answered every question, open All questions and tap Submit answers.

Your teacher listens to your recording and can give it a score and a comment. You see them when your teacher releases the answers.

Allow the microphone

If you said no when the phone asked, the app says it needs the microphone. Turn it on in your phone's settings:

  • iPhone: open Settings, find Smrt English, and turn on Microphone.
  • Android: open Settings, then Apps, find Smrt English, open Permissions, and allow Microphone.

Then go back to the question and tap the microphone again.

Teachers

Students' recordings wait for you in Review open answers on the assignment page. Listen, give a score and a comment if you want, and tap Save and next. See Mark writing and speaking answers in the app.

When you try an exercise with your class using Show exercise, the speaking question says "Students record their answer here". Nothing is recorded in the preview.

If it still doesn't work

  • "The recording did not upload": the recording needs a connection to save. Check your Wi-Fi or mobile data and record again.
  • The app still says it needs the microphone: check the Microphone setting for the app again in your phone's settings, then close and reopen the app.
