Turn app notifications on or off

Open Profile and go to Notifications. There is a switch for each kind of notification, so you can turn each one on or off. If your phone has notifications off for the app, tap Turn on, or Open Settings to allow them in your phone's settings. The app sends nothing between 9 pm and 7 am in your school's time zone.

Turn notifications on

The first time you use the app, it asks if you want notifications. Tap Turn on notifications, then allow them when your phone asks. If you tap Not now, the app asks again after 14 days.

On an iPhone, after Not now, notifications still arrive quietly in Notification Centre, with no banner or sound.

To turn them on later:

1. Tap your picture to open Profile.

2. Under Notifications, the app says "Notifications are off on this device". Tap Turn on.

3. If the button says Open Settings, your phone has notifications blocked for the app. Turn on notifications for Smrt English in your phone's settings, then come back to the app.

Choose which ones you get

Under Notifications in Profile, turn each switch on or off. You need a connection to change them.

Students:

• New assignments and quizzes: when your teacher gives your class new work. Work given during class time arrives at 4 pm as one notification.
• Due tomorrow: at 6 pm the evening before, if you have not started yet.
• Answers released: when your teacher shows the answers to work you submitted.
• Teacher feedback: when your teacher reviews your work.
• Work not started: once a week, the work from class you have not started yet.

Teachers:

• Work to review: one summary each afternoon of answers waiting for you, if you mark work.
• Requests to join: when a student asks to join one of your classes.

School admins:

• Weekly summary: on Monday morning, what needs attention at your school this week.

When notifications arrive

• Quiet hours: nothing arrives from 9 pm to 7 am in your school's time zone. Anything sent then arrives in the morning.
• At most two reminders a day about new work and work not started.
• Three or more at once arrive as one notification.
• Tap a notification to open the work, quiz or class it is about.

If it still doesn't work

• Check that notifications for Smrt English are on in your phone's settings.
• Check the switch for that kind of notification in Profile.
• Notifications that arrive at the wrong time of day: your school's time zone may be wrong. Ask your school admin to check it. See Use the Smrt app as a school admin.
• A new phone only gets notifications about work given after you signed in on it.
• Signed in on two phones? Each phone you sign in on can get notifications. When you sign out, that phone stops getting them.
