Teach with the app without internet

Save the unit you are teaching and the next one on your phone, so lessons and exercise previews open in a classroom with weak internet.

For teachers3 stepsUpdated 7 October 2026

The Smrt app can save the unit you are teaching and the next one on your phone. Open Profile, go to Offline and choose Current and next unit. The app downloads the pictures and audio on Wi-Fi. In class with no connection, your class page, lessons, exercise previews and quizzes still open, and work you assign is sent when you are back online.

The Offline choices for teachers in Profile

Save your course

  1. Tap your picture to open Profile.

  2. Under Offline, choose Current and next unit.

  3. Stay on Wi-Fi while the app downloads. Profile shows a progress bar, for example "Saving for offline: 892 of 2143 files".

The app saves this for every class you teach. As your class moves on to the next unit, the saved units move on too. The text of your lessons is always saved, whatever you choose.

How much space it takes

Pictures and audio take space. One unit of a course can be around 70 MB, so three classes can take several hundred MB. When the download is done, Profile shows what is saved, for example "Saved on this phone: 456 MB of pictures and audio."

To free up space, choose Don't save. The app asks "Delete offline files?". Tap Delete.

What works offline

  • Your class page, with its units and lessons.
  • Lessons, with the pictures and audio of the saved units. Other media shows "Available when you're online".
  • Exercise previews with Show exercise, to try an exercise with the class. Show answers works too.
  • Home, the Exercises and Quizzes tabs, your student list, and your latest assignments and quizzes.
  • Assigning exercises and quizzes. They show Waiting to send and go out when you are back online. See My work says "Waiting to send".

What needs the internet

If it still doesn't work

  • Pictures or audio are missing in class: open the app on Wi-Fi before class and wait until the progress bar in Profile is gone.
  • You are teaching a unit further ahead: only the current and next unit are saved. Teach that lesson with a connection, or use it as text only.
  • Your phone is full: choose Don't save in Profile. Lessons and exercise previews still open, with their text only.
