Smrt app

Use the Smrt app as a teacher

Assign work, review answers, give quizzes and add students from your phone, with the same account and classes as the website.

For teachers5 stepsUpdated 7 October 2026

The Smrt app for iPhone and Android works together with the Smrt English website. Sign in with the same account you teach with, and your classes, assignments and results are the same in both places.

Get the app

Already have the Smrt app? Update it to get the new version.

Tap Log in with Google or Log in with Microsoft. Use the same email address you use on the website. The app has no sign-up and no password reset. If you have no account yet, ask your school. See Sign in with Google or Microsoft and I can't sign in to the Smrt app.

Choose a class

If you teach more than one class, tap the class name at the top of the screen to switch. Home, Exercises, Quizzes and Class all follow the class you choose.

Home

Home shows what needs you today:

  • Continue where you left off: your last assignment, with how many students handed it in and the average score.
  • New students: students who joined in the last 7 days. Tap ✓ to keep them, or ✕ to remove them from the class. In kids' classes, students ask to join, and you approve or decline them here.
  • Up next to assign: the next two lessons in your course. Tap the round button to assign one.
  • Needs you: closed quizzes with hidden answers, answers to review, and work due today that students have not started.

Assign an exercise

  1. Open Class. On the Course tab, open a unit.

  2. Tap Assign next to a lesson. You can also tap Assign exercise on the Exercises tab.

  3. Choose a due date. The default is one week. Work is due at 11:59 pm in your school's time zone.

  4. Choose when students see the answers: After they submit or When I release.

  5. Add a note for students if you want, then tap Assign.

To assign several lessons at once, tap Select, tick the lessons, and tap Assign N exercises.

An exercise you assigned in the last 30 days cannot go out again. After 30 days you can assign it again, and students start fresh.

See Assign work in the Smrt app.

To try an exercise with the class first, open the lesson and tap Show exercise. Nothing is saved. Use Show answers to go through the answers together.

Check results

Open the Exercises tab and tap an assignment. You see who has submitted, who is still working, and who has not started. Tap a student's row to see their answers.

From the ⋯ menu you can:

  • Release answers or hide them.
  • Change due date.
  • Add or edit the note.
  • Remove exercise.

Tap ↺ on a student's row to reopen the work for them. See Reopen an assignment or quiz for a student.

Review open answers

Writing, speaking and short answers can wait for you to mark them.

  1. On the assignment page, tap Review open answers.

  2. For each student, give a score and a comment if you want.

  3. Tap Save and next, or Skip to next.

Students see your marks when the answers are released. See Mark writing and speaking answers in the app.

Quizzes

  1. Open the Quizzes tab and tap Assign quiz.

  2. Choose a quiz, set the due date, and tap Assign quiz.

A quiz that is open in this class, or was due in the last 30 days, cannot be given again yet. If students join after you give a quiz, open the quiz and add them.

Open a quiz to see each student's score. The ⋯ menu has Release answers, Change due date and Remove quiz. See Take a quiz in the Smrt app.

Students

Open Class and tap the Students tab. You see each student's missing work and when they were last active. Sort the list, or search by name or email. Tap a student to see their classes, scores, attendance and recent work.

To add students, tap the add button at the top of the tab. You can:

  • Share the class code.
  • Tap Show QR code for students to scan with their phone camera.
  • Add a student by email. New students get an invitation.

See Join a class in the Smrt app.

To remove a student, tap ⋯ on their row and choose Remove from class. Their work is kept.

Teach offline

The app can save your course on your phone, for classrooms with weak internet. After you sign in, choose Current and next unit or Don't save. The app saves the pictures and audio of the unit you are teaching and the next one. Files download on Wi-Fi. To change it, open Profile and go to Offline.

When you are offline, lessons and exercise previews still open. Work you assign shows Waiting to send and goes out when you are back online. The Café needs a connection. See Teach with the app without internet.

Notifications

Turn on notifications to get:

  • A message when a student asks to join a kids' class.
  • A daily summary at 4 pm of answers to review, if you mark work.

To choose which ones you get, open Profile and go to Notifications. See Turn app notifications on or off.

Use the website for everything else

These stay on the website:

School administrators use the app too. See Use the Smrt app as a school admin.
